NYFW Diaries: Day 1 Recap

February 15, 2017

Attending NYFW has always been a dream for me. Read all about my first full day in part one of my NYFW diaries below!

This season, for F/W 2017, I decided to hop on a plane and fly across the states to attend my first fashion week. I’ll be sharing some beginner tips in a future article–stay tuned for that!

My first day was actually a couple of days into NYFW. I had the pleasure of being a part of three full days full of talented and inspiring designers. On Friday morning, I connected with Caitlin of Beauty and Colour and Megan of Styled by Megan and caught an Uber to my very first fashion show.

Dan Liu‘s “A Fairy Tale in Autumn” created a collection that caught my attention from beginning to end (sidenote: this fairy tale dream ended with a solo singing performance by the designer himself!) Each look held a European-inspired sleek and classy balance (red, navy blue, black, and beige) while also including spunky pops of light pink. The subtle details are what really stood out in this show: the vibrant makeup on each model, sleeve details, colorful scarves and slightly teased to perfection hair-dos. I was happy to see all the straight cuts in pieces as each modern-day princess strutted the runway. See my favorite looks below:

Next up: LANYU. I was pleasantly surprised with this show! The only thing I was expecting was the intricate Chinese embroidery that Lan Yu is known for. The show started off with some my favorite looks immediately. Long, oversized coats were seen, draping over the models in pastel pinks and mint greens. Each look graced the runway with a romantic feel, emboldened with rich pinks and greens over the models brows. Each look cohesively pulled off pastels–even for the fall season–and managed to be sexy, refined, and dreamy all at once. These are a few of my favorites off the runway:

The last show for the day was another mind-blowing runway presentation: Hakan Akkaya. What a 360 from the last show I attended! Akkaya went full-on badass with this F/W 2017 Collection with the majority of his collection being all-black with touches of metallic silvers, hardware, and mesh. This collection was definitely made for the ultimate cool girl rebel, and albeit his collection being absolutely seamless, there were so many effortless idc statements nailed so well. Models strutted their looks with bare skin or covered skin, wet hair or completely frizzed out, smokey eyes or flaunted no-makeup-looks. Each look was a complete surprise that complemented the rockstar music that got each person in the audience pumping. I’m all about sticking to your own style, no matter how different from the crowd it can be, and Hakan Akkaya delivered no less. See some of my favorites below:

After grabbing a quick bite at Le Pain Quotidien, we ventured off to Cha Cha Matcha to get some matcha fix, yum! (Future post on this adorable retro matcha cafe coming soon!)

The last event we had planned for the day was a Stylinity hosted event at Lulu Frost, a jewelry brand in SoHo showcasing a mixed modern antique style. You can check them out here. It was a fun networking event! I got to meet a few bloggers from NY and some of my Style Collective sisters. We went to dinner thereafter at a gorgeous little tapas spot not too far away–Boqueria (sangria, anyone?)

After retiring with a Dan Liu after party, we all pretty much hit the bed to get enough rest for the upcoming weekend. Day 1 was enough excitement on its own. Not only do I love just being in the city, I was able to immerse myself in inspiration from creative and talented individuals. These designers spend an enormous amount of time and effort to create 15 minute art exhibits twice a year, and I am truly grateful to have been invited to be a part of them this season.

Many, many more posts to come regarding this fast-paced week! Is there NYFW content you’d like to see more of? Comment below! xx
